Hello!

Nice to meet you. Let me first introduce myself. My name is ZhengXiao. I am from a placed called Changsha in Hunan. I am so sorry my English is not good, so I have used the online translator to convert the text written in Chinese. I hope you can understand the translated mail of this friend.

All the pictures were shared by him.

This seems to be the entrance to the Air Port

I came across your blog accidently. Thank you for your praise of China. China and India are ancient civilizations. They have a long history and cultural traditions.

In fact China too is still not counted among the developed countries. We are still a developing country. There are still many areas in which progress needs to be made, but I think it will improve and catch up with the developed nations.

I learnt from your blogs that you had gone to Wuhan. When I saw your blog post my heart was filled with excitement, because then you were very very close to Changsha, Hunan, my Changsha, where I live. I hope when you get to visit again this side, you will come to Changsha too. I am sending to you some pictures of Changsha. Although I haven’t personally taken these photos but they carry my feelings as well, because they show the beautiful scenery of Changsha.

Hunan’s primeval forests were first occupied by the ancestors of the modern Miao, Tujia, Dong and Yao peoples. It entered the written history of China around 350 BC, when under the kings of the Zhou Dynasty, it became part of the State of Chu. At this time, and for hundreds of years thereafter, it was a magnet for migration of Han Chinese from the north, who cleared most of the forests and began farming rice in the valleys and plains.

To this day many of the small villages in Hunan are named after the Han families who settled there. Migration from the north was especially prevalent during the Eastern Jin Dynasty and the Southern and Northern Dynasties Periods, when nomadic invaders pushed these peoples south.

During the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period, Hunan was home to its own independent regime, Ma Chu.

Hunan is located in the south-central part of the country, to the south of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and south of Lake Dongting. The province derives its name from “Hunan” from its location corresponding to Lake Dongting as Hunan means “south of the lake”.

Hunan is sometimes called and officially abbreviated as  Xiāng , after the Xiang River which runs through the province. Xiangjiang River is the most important river in the region. It flows from south to north through the whole territory, the territorial length of the river in Hunan is of about 75 km. It flows towards north through the Changsha city dividing the east and west of the city into two parts.

Hunan borders Hubei in the north, Jiangxi to the east, Guangdong to the southeast, Guangxi to the southwest, Guizhou to the west, and Chongqing to the northwest.

Hunan and Hubei became a part of the province of Huguang until the Qing dynasty. The Hunan province was created in 1664 from Huguang, renamed to its current name in 1723.

Hunan became an important communications center due to its position on the Yangzi River (Changjiang). It was also on the Imperial Highway constructed between northern and southern China. The land produced grain so abundantly that it fed many parts of China with its surpluses. The population continued to climb until, by the nineteenth century, Hunan became overcrowded and prone to peasant uprisings. Some of the uprisings were caused by ethnic tensions like ten-years long Miao people rebellion of 1795-1806.

The Taiping Rebellion began to the south in Guangxi Province in 1850. The rebellion spread into Hunan and then further eastward along the Yangzi River valley. Ultimately, it was a Hunanese army under Zeng Guofan who marched into Nanjing to put down the uprising in 1864.

Hunan was relatively quiet until 1910 when there were uprisings against the crumbling Qing dynasty, which were followed by the Communist’s Autumn Harvest Uprising of 1927. It was led by Hunanese native Mao Zedong, and established a short-lived Hunan Soviet in 1927. The Communists maintained a guerrilla army in the mountains along the Hunan-Jiangxi border until 1934. Under pressure from the Nationalist Kuomintang (KMT) forces, they began the famous Long March to bases in Shaanxi Province. After the departure of the Communists, the KMT army fought against the Japanese in the second Sino-Japanese war. They defended the capital Changsha until it fell in 1944. Japan launched Operation Ichigo, a plan to control the railroad from Wuchang to Guangzhou (Yuehan Railway). Hunan was relatively unscathed by the civil war that followed the defeat of the Japanese in 1945. In 1949, the Communists returned once more as the Nationalists retreated southward.

Hello Li,Sorry, I didn’t notice your comment earlier.I don’t understand what you mean by your comment. Maybe you wonder that how as an Indian can I write such things about China. I write about what I saw in China and I want the people of my country to learn from the progress of China. These pictures and many more that I post here are not of the places I have been to. These are sent to me by the people from all over China. You too can send to me the pictures of your home town and I will write a blog on that. You can write to me at 2220858872qq.comNavneet

Dear DD,
I haven’t compared Gandhi with Mao. There can be no comparison. Their ideologies were different, as was their approach. Many Chinese deify Mao as many Indians worship Mahatma Gandhi but then there was someone who shot him. There must be millions not agreeing to his policies. Possibly the methods adopted by Mao were cruel and his road to success was laid in blood of many innocents but for many he proved to be a messiah. For some killing is a sin but for others it’s an oblation.

Hello Mattdamon,
I think everything that Mao, did or wrote became very famous because he became a cult figure and people worship him. I don’t know far does the present government follow his ideology but he is like Mahatma Gandhi is to the Indian government. They say, that they are following his teachings but they are as removed from those as is the Sun away from the earth.

Hello Ocean,
When you wrote about Talwandi Sabo, I knew why you were writing but I didn’t think, you were connected. This project may be late but it cannot fail because here the government is in collaboration with a very big private partner named Vedanta and the government is answerable to the people, but since government is involved it won’t be anything less than the Common Wealth Games :). It will run but there will be allegations and counter allegations of corruption. This project may bring you to India before I come to see you. As regards your belief in mystical powers, it may also come true one day because I think I have told you that I am developing a website (Chinese/English). Though the home page of the site will open for blogging but in the “Other Services” section will be my commercial objective of the site which is to provide a platform for Engineering Service and Cultural Exchange. The Cultural Exchange portal will be for providing /assisting mutual exchange tourism packages and exchange of movies/exhibitions etc. The Engineering Services will have platform for Marketing Window for Engineering Products and Engineering Services which can be for providing consultancy/services/spares for turnkey projects. This is where I am banking upon many of my Chinese friends for giving me business. Let’s see, how things work out. As of now, I am sending you the link for my website under construction. You “Register” on it and play around its various features and let me know about the defects that you notice so that I may get the bugs removed. At present we are working on only the English Portal. The Chinese portal will be slightly different as it will cater to the tastes of the Chinese :).You can give suggestions about that too and I will get those features incorporated. I am sending you in your e-mail the list of the defects that I have noticed so far and the modifications that I want to do. The site won’t work tomorrow also because at present it is linked to the private server. Initially you may come across many snags, so please be patient, don’t give up or be frustrated. After the Chinese page is linked and is ready later, I will send you the link for trying that.
The whole comment that I wrote got lost because I pressed a wrong key. I want to remove this problem on my website. Please check your mail.

Hello Saoronsky,
By demolishing the feudal system, Mao broke the old order and rid the poor people of centuries of slavery as poor farmers, so he was a kind of messiah for the people who without him wouldn’t have seen liberation. I don’t know if the benefits of his reform reached the Tibetians too or not and as to why do they worship him, if they do as you say.

Hello Soaronsky,
So this image of the man that we see is the Statue of Mao? Thanks for telling us. Normally the statues of the leaders or the famous personalities are copies of their more celebrated pictures. I do not think many people outside China or even in China can recognize Mao from his picture depicted here. Actually Alex sent some short description written below all the pictures, but that was in Chinese and I could not understand that. I have asked a friend of mine now to translate all those and in the next part of the blog I will include some description of the pictures too. By the way what is the meaning of this?

“The statue of Mao is in JUZIZHOUTOU island of xiangjiang river,There is not the statue of Mao is in JUZIZHOUTOU when I went to Changsha first in 1996, and the scence of JUZIZHOUTOU is not so beautiful also”
Is the island that we see here in the picture JUZIZHOUTOU island? As regards ‘places not being beautiful’ can be said for most places in China before 1996 or there about. I think all that beautification started on economic upturn of the country which started around that time.

Is that a statue of Mao? It is so different from the image, people of the world have of him and that is of a balding fat man in his sixties. I saw one of his statues at Puxi riverside in Shanghai and the other when I went to visit a factory in Wuhan. In both those statues he was shown as a fat man with a receding hairline.

The newest built statue of Chairman Mao is below as I knew ===========================================
In January 23, 2014, Hebei Shijiazhuang Huai Shu Zhen Jinzhou City Qiu villagers to raise funds to set up a statue of Chairman Mao statue, expressed the people to the founding leader admiration
==============================================
In fact, The tibet people like Chairman Mao very much, if you have a chance to travel in XZ.
Mao Zedong although has been dead for thirty years, but many Tibetans in the home, also hung a portrait of chairman mao. Treat him as a Buddha for the same. Mao Zedong has never regarded himself as a God, but the Tibetans had him like a Buddha respect. Never before in history has a Han Chinese, Tibetans can let like God for the same. All of this is voluntary, is a simple feeling. During the Spring Festival, my relatives in the countryside, many rural families, still wearing the old image of chairman mao.

Hello Ryan- First of all, I don’t know why Changsha is called an entertainment city of China- I would rather like to know from the Chinese only then we can decided whether it’s an exaggeration or just a moniker. Sometimes the cities get monikers for some reason and the tag remains attached to it even if the city gets transformed.

Hello Bankim Ji- Most of the text in the bolgs on China is searched by me as the Chinese who write to me and send the pictures have very limited knowledge of English but all of them are enthusiastic about telling of the achievements their country has made. They don’t give as much credit to Mao and whether he was right or wrong is debatable. By snatching away the land from the feudal lords and distributing it among the poor, he really acted like a messiah.
