Let me now do some research on the-
History of Changchun

Changchun is the capital and largest city of Jinlin. Located in the northeast of the People’s Republic of China, it is situated in the center of the Songliao Plain. The name, which means “Long Spring”, originated from the Jurchen language.

It is also known as China’s Automobile City. It is an important industrial base with a particular focus on the automotive sector.

Early history
Changchun was initially established as a small trading post during the reign of theEmperor Jiajing. Trading goods were mainly furs and other natural products during this period. In 1800, Emperor Jiaqing of the Qing Dynasty selected a small village on the East bank of the Yitong River and named it “Changchun Ting”.

At the end of 18th century peasants from overpopulated provinces such as Shandong and Hebei began to settle in the region. In 1889, the village was promoted into a city and came to be known as “Changchun Fu”.

Railway era In May 1898, Changchun got its first railway station located in Kuancheng as a part of the railway line from Harbin to Lushun, constructed by the Russian Empire. Soon after the completion of the railway, Changchun emerged as a major population center in Jilin province

The South Manchuria Railway office of Changchun
After Russia’s loss of the southernmost section of this branch as a result of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905, the Kuancheng station became the last Russian station on this branch. The next station to the south – the new “Japanese” Changchun station, just a short distance to the south – became the first station of the South Manchuria Railway, which now owned all the tracks running farther south up to Lushun. Changchun expanded rapidly as the junction between the Japanese-owned South Manchurain Railway and the Russian-owned Chinese Eastern Railway which continued to have different rail gauge sizes as well as permit licenses until 1935. Changchun had railway repair shops, and the branch lines originating in Changchun extended into Korea and Inner Mongolia.

Manchukuo and World War II
City planning map of Changchun 1932
In 1932 the capital of Manchuchko, a Japan-controlled puppet state in Manchuria, was moved to Changchun. The city was then known as Hsinking which literally means “New Capital”. Pu Yi the puppet ruler resided in the Imperial Palace which has been converted in to the museum. During the Manchukuo period, the region experienced tyranny, brutality, forced conscription and labor and other Japanese sponsored government barbarity. There was a rapid industrialization and militarization as well.

Hsinking was a well-planned city with broad avenues and modern public works. The city underwent rapid expansion in both its economy and infrastructure. Many of buildings built during the Japanese colonial era are there even today, including the Eight Major Bureaus of Manchukuo as well as the Headquarters of the Japanese Kwantung Army.

Hsinking Master Plan Map (1934)
Hsinking was the only Direct–Controlled Municipality in Manchukuo after Harbin incorporated into the jurisdiction of Binjiang Province. The Metropolitan Plan of Great Hsinking was influenced by the renovation plan of Paris in the 19th century, the garden city movement, and theories of American cities’ planning and design in the 1920s.

The city development plan included extensive tree planting. By 1934 Hsinking was known as the Forest Capital. By 1942, Hsinking’s public green space per capita reached 2,272 m2 (24,460 sq ft), which was 5 times more than Japan’s major cities.

Because the effects of war, the Metropolitan Plan of Great Hsinking remained unfinished. Hsinking was planned to be the administrative center and military commanding center. Only light manufacturing units including packing industry, cigarette industry and paper–making were developed during this period.

The population of Hsinking experienced rapid growth after it became the capital of Manchukuo. According to the census in 1934 taken by the police agency, the city’s municipal area had 141,712 inhabitants but by 1944 the city’s population had risen to 863,607, more than 150,000 out of which were the Japanese settlers.

Chemical Destruction and Unit 100
An epidemic of pneumonic plague occurred in surrounding Manchuria from 1910 to 1911. In 1936, the Japanese established “Unit 100” to develop plague biological weapons, although the declared purpose of Unit 100 was to conduct research about diseases originating from the animals.

Here is some account of the depths of depravity to which human being can sink. It is sickening but sadly true. During the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945) and World War II, the Imperial Japanese Army in Changchun- the headquarters of Unit 100 ( Wakamatsu Unit), under the command of a veterinarian named Yujiro Wakamatsu experimented with biological warfare. Though the Unit was involved in research of animal vaccines to protect the Japanese resources but secretly the research was more diabolic in nature. Diseases were tested for use against Soviet and Chinese horses and other livestock. In addition to these tests, Unit 100 ran a bacteria factory to produce the pathogens needed by other units. Biological sabotage testing was also handled at this facility and that meant everything from poisons to chemical crop destruction and whatever that can bring misery and death on mass scale was the subject focus of the Unit. Such little was the importance of human life to the devils doing research that following hair raising account needs no explaining.

This is one Sgt. Kazuo Mitomo’s account of some of Unit 100’s human experiments:
I put as much as a gram of heroin into some porridge and gave this porridge to an arrested Chinese citizen who ate it; about 20 minutes later he lost consciousness and remained in that state until he died 15-16 hours later. We knew that such a dose of heroin is fatal, but it did not make any difference to us whether he died or lived. On some of the prisoners, I experimented 5-6 times, testing the action of Korean bindweed, bactal and castor oil seeds. One of the prisoners of Russian nationality became so exhausted from the experiments that no more could be performed on him, and Matsui ordered me to kill that Russian by giving him an injection of potassium cyanide. After the injection, the man died at once. Bodies were buried in the unit’s cattle cemetery.

Siege Of Changchun
The city was extensively damaged during the World War II. The city was taken by the Soviet Red Army in 1945. The Russians maintained a presence in the city during the Chinese Civil War in 1946. Kuomintang forces occupied the city in 1946 but they were not able to stop the take over the Countryside by advancing Communist forces. The city fell to the communists in 1948 after the five months of siege by the People’s Liberation Army. The siege caused famine and consequently between 100,000 to 300,000 civilians reportedly died.

People’s Republic
People’s Republic of China renamed the city as Changchun and made it the capital of Jilin in 1954. The Changchun Film Studio is film studios of that era. Changchun Film Festival has become a unique gala even for film industries since 1992.

From the 1950s, Changchun was selected to be developed as a center for China’s Automobile Industry. Construction of the First Automobile Works (FAW) began in 1953 and production of the Jiefang CA-10 truck, based on the Soviet ZIS-150 was started in 1956. In 1958, FAW introduced the famous Hongqi Limousines.

Changchun hosted the 2007 Winter Asian Games and is the second Chinese City to do so after Harbin hosted them in 1996.

There are many more pictures in the folder named Changchun. These were sent to me by many Chinese who interacted with me at that time. Those pictures will be added to the YouTube videos and the book, when published.

Hello Michelle,
My response to the comments is becoming a cliched repetition for every Chinese who is fuming over the atrocities committed by the Japanese. You may not be knowing much about the Indian history but we were brutalized, raped, tortured, persecuted, converted by the Invaders. Our religious places were demolished and the riches were looted for one thousand years. I will bring the stories from Indian history when I start my own website which I plan to do soon. Child marriage became a custom in India because the mughals would kidnap girls. Sati ( immolation ) by sitting on the pyre of the dead husband came in vogue because the invading armies of Islamists would rape the captured women. Let me keep the comment short by saying that revenge can never bring peace. It’s said that “Forgiveness is divine”. Yes it is very difficult to forget the injustice done to our loved ones but tell me how can hate resolve issues?

Navneet Ji:
your response is shock me because my India history teacher tell me Sati is in prosperous because British colonialism. I do not even know it have Islamic resourse.
I must say personally I am someone always against those Chinese fuming to Japanese. however, I am still desire for the third Sino-Japanese war. and I believe this time we will make Japanese pay the price more than their imagination. it looks controversial, but it is not controversial to me because there some facts your Indian do not know. it just like Pakistan and India. these two country born because great partition, and millions life disappear due to this huge tragedy. but, the hatre of partition also seems so cliched. however, the hatre between your country and Pakistan still not disappear just because Pakistan still send somebody like Kasab to your country. obviously Kasab is not a victum of great partition. so your Country still hate Pakistan. it is same here, we catch many Japanese spy every year and last time it is happen in 2008 Sichuan earthquake, the Japanese send whole “rescue team” to my country but they are all spy in fact because our soldier finally catch them beside of our sercet military base. and we Chinese know Japanese government hide this fact to Japanese and even whole world. but chinese will not be cheated.
so Japanese is not simply the enemy of China in history, they are still the worst enemy to us even in today. and for god sake if one day we sink their islands into pacific ocean, the far east asia will be finally live in peace. or maybe China can blow whole 52 nuclear power plant of Japan and cover all Japan by radiation dust. then we will have a great future.

Hello Seanlee,
America has not apologized for bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. British have never apologized for the atrocities they committed on Indians for over four hundred years. The settlers in the Central America, the whites have never apologized for the genocide of the Red Indians, South Africans have never apologized for the racist crimes, the terrorists aren’t sorry for their bombings, America is not sorry for Iraq, Lybia and where ever they are bombing and killings the innocents and for that matter in your own country the torch bearers of the revolution have never apologized to the intelligentsia for ridiculing them, they have not apologized for depredation of national heritage in the name of blasphemy. Right or wrong is a matter of perspective. I am not trying to speak in support of the Japanese but what I want to say is that vengeance and hate cannot bring peace and happiness.

easy say than done and if every one accept and think like what you think, the world will get peace of mind, but in reality, as of this moment, it is still very far.. and for India’s case, would India people forgive Pakistan if any? What the white had done in the past is not like the cruel japanase. Why we must accept and forgive those who had caused serious mortality to human life? On the other hand, it is hard for the culprit to sincerely apologize for what they had done? If they cannot do this, why we must forgive them? if this happened to India, I bet India people will never forgive them if there is no sincere apologize & compensation! German had done a good job and that is why the world is forgive them. Please think if this happened to your country and your love one!

Dear Cindy,
I will see the video but let me repeat what I have written here many time before as well. We certainly cannot understand the pain inflicted on the Chinese by the Japanese but let me tell you that the Indians were raped, tortured and murdered for one thousand years buy the invading, Turks, Afghans, Mughals, Protugese, French and the British. I bring to you the stories from Indian history on my website I plan to start soon but history is for humanity to take lessons from. The world has changed now. It’s a level playing field for all of us now, so let us forget our pasts.

Hello Cindy,
I would ask Britain and the whole Islamist world whose forefathers plundered and raped Indians for one thousand years to apologize from the Indians. Has America apologized from the Red Indians or Australia from the aborigines? The British try to be magnanimous peace brokers all over the world but they have erased from the history all records of torture and murders of the Indians. The scheming and manipulation the did for ruling India has no parallels in the annals of history. Take out time and read something about the years of slavery in America or how they were captured, chained, transported, how the mothers were separated from their newly born children and sold separately. Read, how Christianity spread in Europe what was done to the people who didn’t adopt it? The world history is full of crime against humanity and it is committed by none else but man against man.

Hi navneet ji, as a Chinese point of view,if Japanese government and people could introspect their terrible behavior like what germany did,the relationship between japan to China and Korea will be better.Yasukuni Shrine issue become a conflict between japan and the two country,Hideki Tojo and other Japanese top class A war criminals still stayed in Yasukuni Shrine, and Japanese senior officials still visit there year by year. After the WWII,American support Japan to against communist ,liquidation of the crime in the war was not complete,Abe’s grandfather was class A war criminal,he elected as primier of Japan in 1950’s,you can google this.

Nothing in the world a nation is more than the Japanese nation deformity
Cindy / / 7 months ago

Dear Sailor Navnee,
If every one understand and accept your ‘Past is dead’, the world ‘may be’ is peace and without dispute including both India and China since it is under a big village. India people will never understand the pain and disaster caused by cruel japanese to most of East and South East Asian people during the war! And even until today, they still never feel guilty of what they had been done in the past. They wanted to be No.1 nation and leader in Asia but they always forgotten they already rejected to be Asia and admitted themselves as EU members!

Hello Navneet, what your writing is true happened, while Chinese seldom see such message in website, so we are excited, please forgive us. Change an angle, If we talk with a Japanese, it is true happened that the United States big bang Tokyo and killed millions of Japanese, even put 2 atomic bombs to Japan, but the Japanese maybe embarrassing where hearing these. It is true happened US flight with English during American independence War, but I think it is not very important when we want to know how Americans life nowadays. Maybe we should learn to be tolerant, these things was a long time ago, Why should us bear unnecessary burden of history now? Indian, Japanese, Chinese, British, Americans now are peace loving. Finally, please forgive my offensive, what you said is right. No matter what you write, We will support you and I deleted my previous comments, We like your article because you have a different angle of view compared with Chinese, we all like you so you have so many fans from China.

Hello Xiyanyang,
Why have you removed your comment. I think you had made a very balanced and a good comment. In any case one has a right to express his/her thoughts. I express them freely and I think people like my frankness and most of the people can identify with my sentiments. Irrespective of our nationality and race all human beings want to live in peace and harmony. Envy, jealousy, greed, pride, desire, covetousness- we all have these common traits though their degree varies in each individual. In spite of all our shortcomings and our failings, we are essentially the same who respond to love, are moved by compassion, are inspired by beauty- you and me are same Xiangyang, only our outer covering ( the body in which the soul resides) is different.

Hello Lintianxin,
It wasn’t my idea to bring out painful memories of the past and raise passions but it’s mention was necessary for the continuity of narration. As xiyangyang has said, getting angry over the happenings over the past serves no purpose as it can bring no peace in the world. In the present day world winning the territories by might of sword has no meaning. Now a days one who can win the hearts of the people by his show of love and concern is the real king.
Navneet
lintianxin / / 8 months ago

Navneet you’re right, I seem to be too excited, I should calm down, I’m just not long ago just to see some of the Japanese bacteria War documentary film of Japanese atrocities, makes me very angry, today I saw your post is touched, a sentiment too excited, please forgive me. After all, many years ago, I should see this thing in a calm manner, and remember the lessons of history is more important.
navneetkumarbakshi / / 8 months ago

Hello Xiyangyang,
That is the most sensible approach one can have for lasting peace and friendship on this planet. Indian history is replete with murder, mayhem and atrocities committed by the invading Moghuls and the British and we were ruled and tortured for centuries. We can’t continue to nurse grudges against all the races who ruled us. Today’s world is a level playing field and we are all equal now.

Yes, China is the only World War II suffered large-scale, as the organized , planned biological warfare and chemical warfare victims , many of the tenacious resistance of the Chinese army invading Japanese army suffered almost all chemical and biological warfare attacks. Therefore, the Japanese troops to chemical weapons called “victory weapon .” Not only that, more innocent Chinese civilians, whether man or woman , the elderly or children, are chemical weapons and biological weapons, targets , the Japanese Kwantung Army Detachment 100 is notorious bacterial force that inhumane manner experiments with living bacteria , the bacteria do all the terrible things before the end of troops did not forget to leave China last sin. 731 go left when plague , the first 100 units are sown cholera. Until mid- August 1946 , cholera gradually subsided . However, biological and chemical weapons left over from the Japanese invaders was found so far is still , and poison the Chinese people . My friends, today, anyone with a conscience Chinese people have sufficient reason and anger , today’s attempt to beautify its history of aggression , refused to apologize , and the Japanese government have remorse anger and vigilance unforgettable ! It also reminds us that this is still not stable in today ‘s world, peace is so precious ! Finally, I must apologize , I talk too much , and I appreciate this blog should be good in the wonderful photographs instead of chatter here , forgive me , sailor uncle .

Yes, Sad indeed. We have a very good impression of the Japanese maybe because not many movies like those on Nazis have been made depicting atrocities committed by the Japanese but such accounts are sickening and one wonders what drives men to such lows of morality.
